Direct answer
Five hours after your first message, and once a week at your account's fixed time
On Claude Pro and Max, the 5-hour session limit starts when you send the first message of a block and resets in full five hours later. It isn't a rolling drip-back. The weekly limit resets at a fixed day and time assigned to your account. Verified Ultra accounts have no 5-hour limit, only weekly limits. Enter your first-message time or your weekly reset below to get the exact reset in your time zone and in UTC, with a live countdown. Checked November 8, 2026.
Your plan and time zone
Pro has a 5-hour session limit and weekly limits. Claude, Claude Code and the IDE extensions share both.
All times below are read and shown in UTC. Detected from your browser: UTC.
This tool doesn't know your account's usage. It does time math on what you enter, in your browser, and sends nothing anywhere. Your real reset times are in Settings > Usage on claude.ai, in /usage in Claude Code, and in the limit message itself.
When does my 5-hour block reset?
Enter the time of the first message in your current block. The block resets in full five hours after that message. It doesn't drip back hour by hour.
Defaults to when you opened this page. Change it to the time you actually sent the first message.
Defaults to the current reset time, the earliest a new block can start.

Weekly limit
When does my weekly limit reset?
Weekly limits reset at a fixed time assigned to your account. It doesn't depend on when you subscribed. Copy the day and time from Settings > Usage.
As shown in Settings > Usage.
The Monday 12:00 AM default is only a sample.

Status line
Convert a status-line resets_at value
Claude Code passes rate_limits.five_hour.resets_at and rate_limits.seven_day.resets_at to status line scripts as Unix epoch seconds. Paste one, or a JSON fragment that contains it.
Epoch seconds, epoch milliseconds, or ISO 8601 with Z or an offset.
rate_limits appears only for Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers (or behind a gateway that sets a spend limit), and only after the first API response in a session. Claude Code drops a window once its resets_at time passes.
Transparent math
How the 5-hour and weekly windows work
The 5-hour session block is a fixed block, not a sliding window. It starts with your first message and resets in full five hours later. Messages later in the block don't move the reset. Once it resets, nothing happens until you send another message, which starts the next block. Claude, Claude Code and the IDE extensions all draw from it. The 5-hour window guide covers what to do when you hit it.
The weekly limit is a separate, larger cap across all models. It resets at a fixed time each week that Anthropic assigns to your account, regardless of when you subscribed. Max and Ultra also have a separate weekly Fable limit. Since September 14, 2026, weekly Claude Code limits have been 25% above their pre-promotion levels. See the weekly limit guide for pacing advice.
By plan
Which reset clocks apply to your plan
From Anthropic's help center, pricing page and status line docs, checked November 8, 2026. The Claude Code rate limits guide explains how these subscription limits differ from API rate limits and HTTP 429 errors.
| Plan | 5-hour session limit | Weekly limit | Status line rate_limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | Yes, from your first message | Yes, fixed time per account | Documented |
| Max ($100) | Yes, from your first message | Yes, plus a separate Fable weekly limit | Documented |
| Ultra ($200), verified | No 5-hour limit | Yes, plus a separate Fable weekly limit | Documented |
| Ultra, not yet verified | Temporary limit until automatic verification finishes | Yes | Documented |
| Team / seat-based Enterprise | Not stated on Anthropic's plan pages | Yes, for Claude Code | Not documented |
| Usage-based Enterprise | No per-seat usage limits | No per-seat usage limits | Not documented |
The real numbers
Where to read your actual reset time
Settings > Usage
On claude.ai, this page shows your next weekly reset and, if your plan has one, a Current session bar with the time left. No Current session bar on Ultra means your account is verified.
/usage and the limit message
In Claude Code, /usage shows each window as a percentage with its reset time. When you hit a limit, the session or weekly limit message includes the reset time, which also tells you which clock you hit.
Status line script
A custom status line receives rate_limits.five_hour and rate_limits.seven_day, each with used_percentage and resets_at in Unix epoch seconds. A window can be absent, and Claude Code drops it once its reset time passes.

Worked scenario: a Pro user in New York plans Monday
Illustrative inputs. Time zone America/New_York (EST, UTC−5) on Monday, November 9, 2026. Settings > Usage shows a weekly reset of Thursday 6:00 PM, and the work day ends at 6:00 PM.
| Step | Input | Reset (local) | Reset (UTC) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Block 1 | First message at 9:10 AM | 2:10 PM | 19:10 |
| Block 2 | 20-minute break, first message at 2:30 PM | 7:30 PM | 00:30 Tue |
| Weekly | Reset shown as Thursday 6:00 PM | Thu 6:00 PM | Thu 23:00 |
Blocks before 6 PM
2 (8.5 h of the day)
Weekly countdown at 9:10 AM
3 d 8 h 50 min
Pace at 60% used
1.16× (runs out early)
At 9:10 AM Monday, 51.9% of the week has passed (87 h 10 min of 168 h). With 60% of the weekly limit already used, the pace is 0.60 ÷ 0.519 ≈ 1.16, so this user would hit the weekly wall before Thursday evening even though each 5-hour block resets on time. The useful move is to send routine work to a smaller model and clear context between tasks. Waiting out a block won't help. During block 1, the status line would report rate_limits.five_hour.resets_at as 1794251400, which the converter above turns back into 2:10 PM EST.
Frequently asked questions
When does the Claude Code limit reset?
There are two clocks. On Pro and Max, the 5-hour session limit resets in full five hours after the first message of the block. The weekly limit resets at a fixed day and time assigned to your account. Settings > Usage on claude.ai shows the next reset, /usage in Claude Code shows both bars, and the limit message includes the reset time.
Is the Claude 5-hour limit a rolling window?
Not in the drip-back sense. Anthropic's help center says the period starts when you send your first message and the limit resets in full five hours later. Usage doesn't come back hour by hour. After the reset, your next message starts a new block.
Does sending more messages push the 5-hour reset later?
No. The reset is tied to the first message of the block. Messages later in the block use up the allowance faster, but they don't move the reset time.
When does the Claude weekly limit reset?
At a fixed time each week that Anthropic assigns to your account. It doesn't depend on when you subscribed or when you started using Claude that week. Copy the day and time from Settings > Usage into the weekly section above to get a countdown.
Does Ultra have a 5-hour limit?
Verified Ultra accounts don't. They have weekly limits only. Anthropic verifies Ultra accounts automatically using account and payment history, and a temporary limit applies until that finishes. If Settings > Usage shows no Current session bar, your account is verified.
Does claude.ai chat count against the same reset?
Yes. On Pro and Max, usage in Claude, Claude Code and the IDE extensions counts against the same 5-hour and weekly limits, so a long chat in the browser moves you toward the same wall.
What format is the status line resets_at value?
Unix epoch seconds. Claude Code passes rate_limits.five_hour.resets_at and rate_limits.seven_day.resets_at to status line scripts for Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers, after the first API response in a session. Paste one into the converter above to see it in your local time.
Does this calculator know how much of my limit I've used?
No. It does time math on what you type, in your browser, and sends nothing. Anthropic publishes plan multiples, not token counts, so no outside tool can tell you how close you are. Use Settings > Usage, /usage or the status line for that.
Want to know which days burned the most? The whoburnedmore CLI command npx whoburnedmore --local writes a private HTML dashboard of your daily Claude Code token totals and sends nothing. It doesn't read plan limits or reset times.
